Our swell is made thousands of kilometres away, in storms below Africa and Australia. On this live map you can literally watch the trains of southwest swell roll toward Sumatra — what shows up southwest of us today arrives at the reef in two or three days.

Deano's primary read: Stormsurf's deep-water model table for Sumatra. It's an old-school page and proud of it — swell trains listed by height, period and direction, days into the future. Period is the column that matters: 15 seconds and up means real, long-lined swell.

How we read a Krui forecast

• Swell: southwest, long period

  Ujung Bocur wants southwest swell. 12 seconds of period is fun; 15–18 seconds is the good stuff that lines up down the whole reef. Short-period windswell mostly washes through.

• Wind: east is your friend

  East to southeast trades blow offshore here and usually behave best in the morning. If the forecast shows west in it, surf early or watch the palms from the balcony.

• Tide: mid, moving in

  The wave works on all tides, but mid tide on the push is the friendly window. Dead low exposes the inside — that's booties o'clock, or nachos o'clock.

• Too big or too small?

  Solid and clean: the crew goes to watch (or charge) Way Jambu. Small week: Mandiri Beach and the Krui town waves keep it fun. The full spot guide is on our Surf & Area page.

Season in one line: April–October is the classic window, June–August brings the biggest southwest swells, and something is rideable nearly year-round.
